Are you a lover of carpentry? Do you need to outline or better carve thick thicknesses? Get yourself a bandsaw! Fixed or mobile, these saws will help you cut wood.  A band saw is one of the best tools for your home DIY tasks. You should therefore look for the best band saw that will offer you quality service. In this guide, we will help you understand the various types of band saw and guide you in choosing the best.

Types of Band Saw

movable band saw

In general, there are two types of band saws: workshop band saws mounted on a fixed structure and mobile ones, which, as the name implies, can be moved almost anywhere, especially on the construction site!

Fixed Band Saw

The saw is mounted on a structure, for work at height, or on a table such as a service stand or workbench, convenient for the construction site.

From the smallest models weighing about 20 kg, up to the heaviest ones that exceed 500 kg, stationary band saws are intended for regular use, which justifies the installation of the machine in the workshop. It is necessary to provide space in front of and behind the saw to work the pieces of wood without hindrance. These bandsaws, therefore, have variable characteristics depending on the model – cutting height, power, table width, etc.

Mobile Band Saw

Designed to be carried over the workpiece, this band saw has two handles for practical use. The mobile band saw is not exactly the same as the stationary band saw … yet the principle is the same!

More compact, the mobile saw weighs between 6 and 15 kilos. Equipped with tension rollers, it is very easy to change the blade. It is widely used in carpentry as it allows to intervene directly in height. It is used in particular to make miter cuts or bevels – curved cuts along the edge of a piece of wood. This is why it often has an extra handle to be able to work with two.

In general, you will have understood that when the tool is portable, the user carries it to the piece of wood to be machined; when it is fixed instead, it is the piece of wood carried on the tool.

Band saws cut wood, soft metals, and composite materials – obviously using the right blade! Therefore, depending on the type of cut to be made, you have to choose the band saw that’s right for you!

Tips for Choosing Your Band Saw in the Best Possible Way

band sawChoose a stationary model, provided your workshop is spacious enough to accommodate it, for steady and regular flow work. For series work, the fixed band saw is the most convenient: you place the piece of wood on the surface, and the processing is done simply by pushing and orienting the piece. Do not doubt!

If, on the other hand, you need to work the wood outside the workshop – where the stationary machine cannot go! – choose a portable band saw instead. Being light, it allows, for example, to cut the beams directly on the spot!…
